This place is my go-to health food store. Awesome salad bar but their deli kinna sucks.

We like the fresh veggies. Good selection of foods and goods.

I was on my way back to Seattle from Cannon Beach. I was looking for some food early morning so I checked to see what options I had to choose from. Marlene's Market & deli was a place I had already booked marked. Lets try it out while I can. Alright so this place is two stories. First floor is the grocery store. Really neat selection of healthy options. Definitely reminds me of a Whole foods or Sprouts. Second floor is the deli & juice bar area, & they even have some souvenirs. The space is huge on the second floor, lots of seating space. They have an elevator to take vs stairs if your feeling lazy. They also have a salad bar area which had some good looking options. I was in the mood for a sandwich so I opted to get the blacked tofu wich on a 9-grain bread. The sandwich was exceptional! The veggies tasted extremely fresh & the tofu was very flavorful. Giant sandwich too! The staff is extremely nice & courteous. I guess I looked like I wasn't around this area so they were happy to help. Food is superb & store is really neat. If anybody is in the area this place is a much try.

Be extremely careful when you shop here, the last two consecutive times I shopped here, they tried to overcharge me tremendously. The first time, I bought two items at the deli, they charged me twice for one item. When I immediately went back in for a refund, it took the cashier 20 min to refund me, plus she was sick and coughed on my items. Granted, I understand that many people have to go to work when they are sick to make ends meet, but illness in the food industry is a public health concern. I was hesitant to go back again. When I shopped there the second time, the cashier tried to charge me 400% more than the true price on one bag of produce. When she was finished helping me, she shoved my grocery bag at me. It is extremely disappointing that in a city over-run with fast food restaurants, attempts to eat healthy are met with exploitation and rudeness.

I love Marlene's. I live in Los Angeles, so Whole Foods is my everyday lunch spot. Whenever I am home visiting my mom in Federal Way, since there is no Whole Foods, Marlene's is my spot. I am a vegan and health nut, so of course, it is awesome. They have a great selection of vitamins, and I love their little section with clothes, hats, gifts, jewelry etc. And the juice bar is great.

Have you seen the price tags? Ouch... I mean I have recently been filtering my groceries for organics and healthier alternatives at bigger markets but I've always wanted to come to Marlene's and bookmarked it on Yelp for quite some time. I knew it would be expensive but I was not prepared for HOW expensive. Of course I am aware of the smaller industries and how much extra work it takes to make organic products etc. and I am not complaining. I am all for organics even if it is costly. With that being said, I've been to Trader Joe's (however they are not fully organic) but wow! I felt like I was in food heaven when I stepped in! Everything was organic and there was so much "REAL" produce/products that I wouldn't have to worry about reading every single label on the ingredients. I don't think my poor little wallet can afford groceries here every week but for occasions that are necessary, I definitely plan on buying my groceries here.
(5)Trish K.
This place is SUPER expensive! But if you must have organic and the weird stuff, this is the place to go. I only came here for scented oil extracts but paid a fortune for it. The inside and out is very clean and well organized. It's a great place to shop with helpful and friendly staff... but be prepared for some serious sticker-shock!
(2)Tracy A.
Great store, fresh organic produce. Love the great selection of organic and fair trade products on the second floor. The deli is wonderful, loved my chicken pot pie and kale tomato salad. Yummy!
(5)Jakie S.
Fed Way is lucky to have such a great organic store in their town! There are certain quality milk that only this place and Whole Foods carries. Their veggies are fresh, great kids vitamin options which only this place seems to carry, and not even Whole Foods. It seems like this store sells only the top quality organics. I only wish they carried organic bacon. All in all, I am willing to make the drive to just get the products that I need.
(5)Kitty B.
I give this place 4 stores because it is the ONLY place I can find bulk arrowroot anymore(which I need to make organic baby powder so I need lots) Seriously I have looked everywhere and usually end up buying online and pay a small fortune for a small amount. I get the same amount here for 3 and some change and this place is very clean. It always smells nice like a mixture of Indian food and herbs. It's really expensive though like Trader Joe's on crack but I love supporting the smaller franchises over major which keeps Me coming back occasionally. There are a couple older ladies that work the upstairs beauty registers that leer at Me everytime like I am stealing stuff when alls I am doing in fact is smelling stuff and it makes Me feel uncomfortable so I don't really buy anything from upstairs anymore. The downstairs workers are nice enough albeit a little hipstery but who isn't anymore plus they don't stare at Me like I am a thief for smelling stuff lol.

Whaaat? There's healthy food just off the freeway in Federal Way? It may seem kind of self-serving to say this, but BOOM! Yelp does it again! Coming back from a third trip to Seattle in one week's time, we were famished and needed some grub to get us through the grueling drive down the 5. Usually in this neck of the woods that means fast food. But no. Out comes the iPhone and what should we find? A veritable oasis of organics less than a block from a freeway entrance. Yay! Great deli and salad bar selections that will favor both the veggies and the carnivores. A solid juice bar for my green juice fix. Items like grilled tofu next to squares of tasty tuna casserole. And a plethora of green groceries, produce, housewares and beauty/bathroom supplies. It's like a Whole Foods but with a better deli and local! WOOT! So instead of my usual guilt-fueled stop at Taco Time JBLM, I cruised down the road with green juice, some sparkling Maté and a deli selection that... well... is still kind of sinful. But the green juice made me feel less guilty about it.
(5)Sissy S.
I love Marlene's! Large & reasonably priced organic produce section...lot's of drop/bulk bin items.
(5)Julee I.
Alibis good but the people who works there audit do is singyou don't really pay attention to you that much
(3)Ilona G.
Pros: their juices are amazing and delicious, I get them weekly at this point! They also have delicious raw desserts (cheese cakes) and especially the Naimo bars, YUM!! Oh and don't get me started on their soups! They carry lots of delicious items, I especially love their new Greek yogurt made locally here in Wa. Cons: being one of very few (2 I think) stores, the prices have to be marked up. When I compared some things here, they tend to be a few dimes to a few dollars higher priced than other stores such as Trader Joes. For example the "real coconut water" is $2.45 here and at Fred Meyers it is usually $2.35. Toms toothpaste is another thing here that is over $5, while at trader joes is closer to $3. So just compare prices and get what you need! Soo the main reason for 3, is the hike in prices compared to other stores.
(4)Nikki T.
I really love having this store nearby. They carry a lot of things that are essentials to me and I can't get anywhere else nearby. That being said, I really only come here to buy a few things. I go primarily to Fred Meyer for groceries (they have a large selection of natural/organic and even homeopathic items) and prefer produce stands like B&E Meats because they have a vast selection of products. I understand this is a small, locally owned store and they need to charge a little more to make a profit, and for that reason I am willing to support them and spend extra for convenience. The one thing that really bothers me is that (especially lately) their staff seems very under informed about the products they sell. I mostly shop upstairs for skin and body care items and the past several times I've been in the sales staff has no idea about the products. I asked someone for arnica and they showed me a bunch of products with argan oil, even after repeating several times what I was looking for and explaining its use. Last time I was there I schooled an employee on oils and what oils can be used for what purposes (most of Marlene's oils can only be used topically, but some can be ingested). I'm also disappointed that they stopped carrying Thesis products as this is the only place I knew that sold it. I do love that I can buy so many brands I love here, Yogi tea, Boirion, Dr Haushka, Uncle Harry's, Everyday Coconut, etc. As well as bulk herbs and a large variety of supplements. I just expect a lot more from their staff and wish they were better informed. I also wish they carried bar milk soap, no where around does!
(3)Amy M.
Marlene's really reminds me of whole foods when comparing product. The fresh produce, gluten free, vegan, dairy, boxed, canned, and bottled food seems to be the same variety as whole foods or metropolitan market. They feature some items like makeup, toiletries, house hold cleaners and gifts, too. All very good quality and high standard. But of course, it comes with the premium price tag. Arguably worth it, though I'd rather shop at trader Joe's, personally. The store itself is clean. Two floors- main level is grocery and the second level is the deli/ cafe and "hard product". (For those of you who don't know retail lingo, that's the term for house hold goods, gifts, etc.) I really liked the deli. So many choices! I had a Sammy and was able to customize the hell out of it. Same price as a Panera Sammy but made with love and organic yummy ingredients. Wholesome~ The staff I interacted with were kind and helpful. The only thing I don't like about this Marlene's is that it's just not an attractive store. I consider high end grocers to be an experience. I want to feel as though I am paying for ambience and product, almost like a restaurant. This location is an ugly warehouse with boring interior.
(4)Tres B.
I hate this place. WAY over priced "raw" food,, its like a pious Trader Joes, with sticker shock. Its got a hippie feel, but not in a peace and love way, more like , I dont shave or trim my testicles way. a small bag of dehyrdate apples $7.50. Nope.
(2)Tina Y.
My favorite place on earth. Fresh juice, smoothie, sandwich and salad bars. Almost everything is organic so it tastes amazingly good and good for you. The deli is amazing. They have so many options for gluenfrees, vegans, pescatarians, etc. Their desserts are so good as well. Get the raw vegan cashew cake! You won't regret it.
(5)Rich W.
You can color Marlene's deli as inconsistent. When they actually have food, it is pretty good. The problem is, there are many times you go in and the salad bar is half stocked, or the deli food is nearly gone. In the past 30 days I've walked in, seen that they had nothing, and walked out again. It's kind of like how they staff the deli upstairs, sometimes there are plenty of people working and sometimes only 1 or 2. Supposedly the deli closes at 8 but I've walked in before at 7 and everything was packed up because it was "a slow evening". OK, why do I even try? It is totally convenience, I stay across the street at the Hampton about once a week. Management, they could use a little planning and management ...
(2)Jacque D.
Everything you need is here! The staff were so helpful and kind and patient and trucked all my baskets up as I was disorganized on my shopping trip ... My only peeve with the place was that it was not well stocked with faux veggie items .... Like chicken replacements it had nothing for . But if you are a meat eater they had plenty of safer options for you . Otherwise loved the place ! Actually had to leave it faster than I wanted because my husband saw I was about to get a little out of control on the buying end :)
(5)Andrea A.
Absolutely love this place! Been coming here for 7 years and have seen the prices drop, which I think is a smart move for them as grocery stores are starting to carrying organics and gluten free items. Even though I come here mostly to buy groceries, it is hard to resist the good smelling lotions, soaps, and cosmetics that are non GMO, organic, and many free of specific allergens and very clearly labeled - such as gluten free. The salads and desserts here are great and the staff are very knowledgeable, helpful, and have great attitudes. I am not sure if it is because they pay them more than other similar retail jobs, or they just believe in the credo of the store. This place always leaves me feeling up beat and part of the larger community. My kids love this store, too! I only wish they would open another location in Sumner/ Bonney Lake/ Lake Tapps! I think they would have a very good market here :)
(5)Ben M.
Great local produce, lots of vegetarian and vegan groceries, a bulk foods section, such and beans and grains, and the deli upstairs is awesome, I go forlunch several times a week. Price is reasonable, but a little bit high; just the normal cost of eating healthy I suppose.
(5)Somaria C.
This rating is specifically for the deli and juice bar! It is a little pricey but you get what you pay for! Which is for quality food! Ingredients are fresh, natural, and organic. I ordered the 1/2 sandwich and soup combo! 1/2 chicken salad on pita with some fixings and chicken tortilla soup. Which was absolutely delicious. I was really impressed with how great the chicken salad tasted. It was full of flavor, moist, and just yummy! My smoothie was my favorite part. I ordered a 20 oz smoothie with an apple juice base with everything in it plus a Marlene's Green booster as well as a Hemp Protein booster. It was soo good. I wish there were a Marlene's closer to home so I could frequent but then again I'm happy there isn't because my pockets won't be hurting as much. Lol.
(5)Kristine B.
Their NANAIMO BARS ARE AMAZING!!! Can you please make a raw alternative to this amazing concoction??? Peace, Love, Raw RAWNAIMO's are good, but too expensive lol. Anyways, the federal way location is definitely bigger than the Tacoma location. More selections too! The staff was really helpful and resolved all of my questions.
(5)Justin H.
Nice market here! I was looking for something like this in the area and thanks to Yelp, I got the hook up now! Really cool store to get things you wouldn't normally see in the regular super market. I am fortunate enough to be able to eat gluten, but if you are one with an allergy this is your store. They have soooo many products that are gluten-free its amazing. Their veggies looked fresh with a nice selection, the frozen section had a ton of different choices, and their upstairs deli looked really good (I stopped in after getting breakfast so I wasn't hungry enough to try the food) I will be coming back here when I am not so full and will have to try their deli!
(4)Jean H.
Dropped by the other day on the way home from Seatac Airport. My 10 year old son was dying for a big salad after 4 hours of travel. He lives in SoCal and said Marlene's has the best salad bar he has ever gone too. I have to agree. The raw desserts and juice bar aren't bad either.
(5)Tom T.
I've been shopping here for years, so this rave review is long overdue. Of all the natural food grocery stores in the Seattle area, Marlene's is the best. Why? 1. Great customer service. Every person on the staff with whom I've had contact is friendly, knowledgeable, very attentive and helpful. In most supermarkets it seems like the staff is largely indifferent and the interaction with the customer is almost burdensome. Not here. 2. The store is relatively small, but a comfortable place to shop. Seldom do you have to squeeze your way through the aisle because it is so jammed with shopping carts. 3. It's quiet. No blasting pop-hits of the eighties--of which I got my fill of . . . in the eighties. 4. They have a good selection of high-quality foods. 5. The supplement and body-care sections are fairly large for a store like this. 6. They offer free seminars at which you can learn more about natural foods/remedies. 7. They have a very nice cafe upstairs. The salad bar is the best. Great place!
(5)Orkide H.
As you probably saw on other reviews already, this is a rather spendy market. I can't walk out of here for less than $20. Raw milk is $7 for the half gallon. Most organic produce is north of $2.50 a pound, and not much of it is local. Sadly there isn't a Whole Foods near to Federal Way, so this is the closest thing you will get to an organic grocer in the immediate area. Good selection but, jeez, don't come here broke.
(3)Tigris W.
LOVE Marlene's for gluten free everything, deli, fresh veggies, gifts and vitamins. Must stop and shop place and conveniently located on 38th.
(5)A. J.
I had the chicken salad sandwich with red onions and I had maybe three rings of onion sliced thin and that was it. The deli seems over priced but I'll still come here once in awhile for the sin dawg bread. Another thing is the lack of gluten free bread in the bread section. Seriously I would think because this is a health conscious place they'd have more options. Also paying over $20 for three grocery items is a bit much. Can get things cheaper other places. They have a few things I can't find elsewhere so I keep coming back. The staff is always friendly too and there's always a sample of something. They also have a list of everything gluten free in their store. More of a 3.5 star rating.
(3)Kii S.
I really LOVE this store! It reminds me of another store I was very fond of back in Cali. called Clark's. I really love what Marlene offers in terms of service, products and the variety of specialty items I wouldn't be able to find at a regular grocery store. The staff is always helpful and eager to assist in anyway! While I do love the quality and variety they have; as others have mentioned things can be pricey here, but what are ya going to do when you can't find it somewhere else. There is Traders Joe's close by but they have a pretty limited selection and there is no Whole Foods near by. C'est la vie!! Marlene's is great for those tough to find items you can't get elsewhere! I love the juice bar and cafe they have upstairs!
(4)Keiko N.
This is an all-around health store. groceries downstairs upstairs there is a deli and household products. it really does have a large selection of organic, herbal and all things natural. There are seminars weekly on different things like cupping, eating raw or eating vegan. I love the juice bar next to the deli. I don't really have any complaints just an all-around expensive store you could easily go in there and spend $200 on groceries for one person for two weeks of food.
(4)Mandy C.
SUPER FUN!!! I can spend hours in here just strolling through the aisles making up recipes in my head and googling new ones as an excuse to try new things. One of the best places, in my (current) opinion, to find healthy, organic, vegan and gluten-free choices for all those health conscious eaters out there. They also have this great cereal aisle that I constantly hang out in that offers some really tasty organic breakfast options. Of course the prices are on the uppity side. But hey, healthy comes with a pretty heavy price. *Raises up hands* If you're not interested in anything downstairs, then head upstairs to look at hippie gift options, organic face creams, feathers, and their oh-so-amazing SALAD BAR and DELI. So GOOD! SO FREAKIN' GOOOOOD! This place is seriously a gem.
(5)Brittany C.
This place is AMAZEBALLS! I recently made the decision to go dairy free and eliminate all meat except for fish. My dad goes to Marlene's a lot and we happened to be near and decided to stop by. HOLY CRAP!! So many choices -- organic produce, food choices for vegetarians and vegans! It makes me not even want to go to a regular grocery store anymore! Upstairs is also amazing -- CRUELTY FREE BEAUTY PRODUCTS AND A DELI that caters to all tastes! I highly recommend the falafel sandwich!
(5)Corianne B.
I'm obsessed with Marlene's Salad Bar and custom sandwiches. I mean, you could order a PB&J panini, for goodness sake. I almost didn't take a new job offer because I was so sad about not being able to eat lunch here every single day. My bank account, however? Not sad. Flourishing, actually. Healthy, organic, vegan, gluten-free options galore. I wish I would have known about Kombucha or Chia Seed drinks when I frequented this spot. I bet it has an amazing selection!
(4)Vera P.
Good organic store for Federal Way, it's nothing like whole food though, very spendy even their yougurts are too overpriced, great salad bar and soups are so fresh and yummy, my favorite has been the Vegetable soup every time I stop by there I have to get some.. great selection of breads and fresh produce, just wish it was more affordable.
(3)DAVID L.
Items Purchased: Vegetables Pretty clean place. The produce area was small, so there wasn't a great quantity to pick from. I felt the place was pretty clean. I just hope this place stays in business, because I'm not really sure the local economy can support this place. I will definitely be a repeat customer here.
(4)Christine K.
Marlene's is one of my favorite things about Federal Way. I feel lucky to live so close to it. I don't even know where to start: BEST salad bar, anywhere, ever. hands down. DELICIOUS homemade soups. AWESOME smoothies made with REAL fruit, not corn syrup and ice in a blender! All ORGANIC produce that is fresh and delicious. And like everyone else has said, the employees are extremely helpful and nice. Go to Marlene's - NOW! I'm there at least twice a week! And to everyone on here complaining about the prices: face it, people. Marlene's is a two-location local business, not a national chain like Whole Foods. Of COURSE Whole Foods is going to have a better price margin, because they can buy in larger quantities. I'm not dissing WF, it's great. But Marlene's is truly a blessing in FW, where there isn't a Whole Foods for miles and miles. Support your LOCAL business!
(5)Brian C.
This place is a good lunch stop. I am not huge believer in the whole organic vegi thing as sometimes I think it is kind of a marketing gimmic but they have a good salad bar and it is clean and everything there is very tasty. I bought some salads for friends to try and soup and they thought it was very good. They usually have a number of different soups to try. The prices are a little up there but that is probably because it is organic and they have to pay a premium, I guess but you really do feel like you are doing your body some good by eating at this place vs. say Crapplebee's or something. Overall I like Marlene's I would give them a 5 star if it wasnt $35 for 2 soups and three salads but I guess its better than spending $35 at some greasy spoon and hating yourself for the rest of the afternoon.
(4)Tara V.
Marlene's is one of the jewels of healthy, vegetarian dining on the south side of Seattle. A great place to grab lunch - fresh juice bar, grilled sandwiches, salad bar - plus organic produce and groceries. I've been coming to Marlene's for over 20 years, and its been exciting to watch her business unfold and expand, sharing healthy living with the community. Definitely a business I support and encourage others to as well. NOTE - The Federal Way store has an excellent staff and superior selection to the Tacoma store. Both locations offer something unique - healthy food in locations that struggle with providing healthy options. Definitely a gift!
(5)Brianna L.
RAW CHOCOLATE DESSERT CLASS Very lovely class and well worth the $25. The instructor, Kim was kind and knowledgeable. She was very open to questions and if she didn't know a certain question, she didn't pretend she did. Her samples were delicious and I liked the plate of different flavors. I hope to take more classes similar to this.
(5)David A.
Great stuff, but a little bit of a high price
(4)Jackie G.
I've walked into health food heaven. Beautifully maintained, all the produce looks uber fresh, and they even had a Decaf Coffee that was swiss water processed..very hard to find. Finally, I can get back to drinking decaf with no formaldehyde and who knows what other horrible chemicals. They have a large variety of food options...frozen, canned, packaged in every way but all mostly ORGANIC. They have a variety of healthy oils you can use to fry to leave the Corn, Canola and Vegetable oils in the dust. NO MO CORN product when you have better choices..almond, olive, walnut, avocado, grape seed, coconut oil and more. Also, they have a large food supplement area dedicated to your needs for any thing if you're familiar with what each supplement is good for. . I left with some probiotics in my bag and plan to add it when I do my juicing. Anyway, they have a second floor, but I didn't get up that way on this night. I will def. go back and check out the other floor tomorrow. Parking is easy, but if you haven't been to the store before it's sort of hard to find if you're not familiar with the area. I strongly suggest getting a map or GPS it for the first time and then you will be off and running. I will be back there to follow up and edit about the second floor later. I have no idea what's up there yet. :) This store has been around for 35 years but in a different location. Apparently the current store used to be the old REI. JUST TO UPDATE: 2015..Yes this place is very VERY expensive but they've pretty much had the market down here from Federal Way all the way down to Steilacom, because WFM hasn't come down here, but that's all going to change by 2016. WFM is going to open and this place might be forced into lowering some of their prices to compete but it really can't compete. WFM is pretty awesome but I won't knock this store. I may just go in to get something from the restaurant upstairs.
(4)Carmen R.
I'm so happy Federal Way has a local health food store. They have a cafe upstairs with amazing soups, sandwiches, and the best salad bar. It is pricey, but I think it's worth the quality you get from the store. They even have a juice bar- yay! They have a great produce section, variety of unique options for diary products, and a lot of fun healthy snacks. Even their lotions and soup products are organic and healthy.
(4)Alex H.
I have a pretty serious love/hate relationship with Marlene's. Because I work around the corner from here I frequent this place at least once a week. I love their salad bar, I love their organic produce selection. And the deli is awesome... Only when they get my order correct tough. I would say it's wrong a solid 4/5 times. And because I'm always in a hurry I never have the time for them to correct it. Is seems like you can request the bread type and meat/tofu, and everything else is a total crap shoot! I just don't understand the constant mishap.
(2)Jessi J.
I will say that he's, they can be over priced. So maybe do some shopping at Fred Meyer before coming here to get the items you know are cheaper there. But they carry items most places don't and that's why I love them! I love having no doubts that everything I am purchasing is organic and wholesome. Their deli is AMAZING! If you ever need a quick bite to eat I would highly suggest coming in. I also loved their baked good they sell. Mouth watering and all made fresh for you! On top of all that the staff is wonderful.
(5)Grindy S.
Pricey, but with a good selection of meat and dairy. I go here rather than Trader Joe's only because I would rather keep my money in the neighborhood.
(3)Anon A.
It's impressive to me that Federal Way is the ultimate suburbia and yet organic food abounds everywhere...well, almost. Marlene's Market is my go to place if I can't find organics at TJ's. Love their veggie/fruit section. The workers there are so knowledgeable and will take their time to answer your questions or just simply chit chat. The price can be a bit expensive but it's still very worth it to me. Wish their meat section was a little more expansive, but no serious complaints there... Have never eaten anything at their deli but the bath products upstairs are pretty nice.
(5)Maylie H.
Love coming here for their deli and salad bar! One of my favorite places to eat when I'm craving something lite. The bakery is also soo super yummy!
(5)Vince N.
Best organic sammy's ever. If you like organic health foods, this store is wonderful. I have to agree that this place is more expensive than your regular grocery market. You do get what you pay for and high quality food comes with a high price. I'm not saying everything here is worth the price but there are good products. If you don't shop here, go up and try food in the deli section. It's definitely tasty.
(4)K H.
Good range in produce and food in general. Second level seems like a very big area with a lot if wasted space on categories of merchandise that just don't compel shoppers when getting those things you get at the grocer. The salad bar looked good, nothing called my name at the deli everything looked OK but not outstanding/must have. Prices were pretty much in line with most healthy/gourmet markets. I will return.
(3)Lisa L.
Marlene's has a nice selection of gluten free products, especially in their GF baking section, to choose from. This is my go-to place for sprouting seeds, herbs for home-made herbal tea and essential oils. If you'd like to meet someone for lunch, their cafe upstairs makes tasty, to order, sandwiches and their soups are tasty. The staff at Marlene's is helpful and usually very friendly. Parking is okay. It can get a bit crowded when both the store and movie theatre are super busy, but it's workable.
(4)Ashley M.
Very healthy and fresh!!! It gets pricey though.
(5)Erin H.
Very excited about this find! If you like to cook naturally, healthy, organic meals this place will be your helper! Also I found lots of ingredients that are hard to find in other grocery stores, more vegetarian and vegan foods as well. Upstairs there are some hard-to-find shampoo/conditioner/soap brands ect. There's what only can be described as a Burt's Bee's SHRINE! I love this stuff. Also they have a little deli/salad bar section which again has vegan/vegetarian options!!! Yay! There are some kitchen wares as well. Only downside is the price but I suppose that's just hat you pay for quality!
(4)Cheryl A.
I absolutely love this place! Has everything I'm looking for and things I didn't know I wanted. When I or my family was ill they always had the right suggestion to bring healing to our situation. They have wonderful animal products. They truly care about the health and well being of their customers. Have ate a vegan dinner at the deli. Absolutely delicious. Was nice to be able to sit down and enjoy a healthy vegan meal and grocery shop in one place. I highly recommend checking this store out.
(5)Jen B.
I am a fan of Marlene's in Federal Way. Great location! Good selection of vitamins. I've had good experiences most every time shopping at Marlenes. Thank you!

Now that the Metropolitan Market has closed this is the only place in the area with diverse baking ingredients. 1 star for the Star Anise pods and cheap vanilla beans ($1.98 each) 1 star for great bulk selection 1 star for great produce selection 1 star deduction for the WAY expensive bulk candy - $8.29 a pound for chocolate covered raisins?? Lots of other overpriced items, but you get the idea. 1 star deduction for terrible parking lot... poorly graded, cracked safety hazard of a parking lot.

Is it crazy to get excited about natural food stores?? Well, call me crazy because I am like a kid in a candy store when it comes to that genre! I love the fact that Marlene's has a nice selection of all my favorites plus their employees seem to genuinely enjoy working there! They are super helpful and knowledgeable! Marlene's is an easy on and off from the freeway with plenty of parking. And, I am looking foward to taking one of their educational classes that are advertised in their free magazines available at the checkstands. For personal care, herbs, vitamins, organic produce and food, this store is a winner in my book. Here's a tip, they do a basket of slightly ripe produce everyday at discounted prices. Look for it on the floor by the produce counter!

After reading reviews that this store was bigger than the one in Tacoma, I had to come check it out. Parking sucks. There's a theater near by so we looped around a bit. Parking spots are a little small and people suck at parking! The store itself was pretty clean and carried a variety of everything. I was a little disappointed in their produce selection though. Love their selection of grains and beans. DH and I never made it upstairs though.

I really love Marlene's. They have most everything, clean, surprisingly competitive prices. Unfortunately the service is sometimes awkward, sometimes overly chatty when a huge line is going, and sometimes a little rude (I have had to practically beg for help upstairs a few times - it'd be better if the makeup wasn't locked away if there's no ones around to man it), so i gave it 4 stars.

I just love their salad bar. They do a lot of cool health seminars too. Check them out.

Wonderful place! We indulged in soup and sandwiches and a quinoa salad. It was all superb and not at all overpriced. I will definitely be back!!

This is the bigger and better Marlene's! I say it's better solely because it is bigger than the one over in Tacoma and because of this it had a hot case in the deli section. Since they have said hot case, they have more delicious vegan foods available for instant consumption. They were able to make me a sammy with the incredible coconut encrusted field roast....which is made of dreams and dreams make tasty sandwiches. That, is a fact. It may be a point of criteria for the employees of this small natural grocery store to have cheery and bubbly dispositions.....I'm pretty sure it is. Every time I have be to either store, the workers were all very pleasant individuals. HIGH FIVE FOR BEING NICE!

I specifically went here for the deli, my bf suggested I would like this place and boy was he right. I got a veggie pita sandwich and it was seriously the perfect size for me, not TOO full but I am definitely good to go until my next meal. They seriously dump on the veggies too, no skimping here. They also have options for people with any kind of diet (vegans, vegetarians, gluten free, etc). A lovely natural foods market! I love how many different choices they have for the beauty and hair/body products, but you can expect for most of them to be comparable to salon prices. I think I'd rather pay a little more for better ingredients, not just in my food but also for the rest of anything else I use for my bod. Basically, I'm going to be back!

Marlene's Market & Deli, is not only an amazing store but hosts a deli-catession epicurians delight! Marlene is very community involved and attempts to support local business' . She stopped into our business, I asked her for suggestions regarding my personal health ( I have been an aquaintance for over a decade as another local business owner).... Later in the day she stopped by again, quietly, unnoticed by all but one person she confided in to please give me a care package.... It was several items she recomended for me.. as a gift.... Lovely people, lovely store. It is run with heart

This place is awesome! The section is wonderful and could find tons of things I couldn't find in a normal store. I also loved the price of things. I found vanilla beans there for a 10th of the price they were at a normal grocery store.

Great locally-owned grocery store that carries a mixture of local, organic, vegetarian, GMO-free, and all-natural foods. Their selection is surprisingly good, and it is a much larger store than I imagined when I first heard about it. Prices are a bit on the high side, but you get what you pay for. The quality beats most of what can be found in the conventional store. Their sale prices are about on-par with typical chain grocery stores, so it is still relatively affordable. Conveniently located a few blocks from Trader Joe's, so there is no need to ever visit Safeway or QFC ever again!

When Marlene's was at a smaller location just across the movie theater (before it became a cheap-o, $2.00 theater), we would stop there as a family and have smoothies, coffees, and cookies after our movies. I really miss the old location because it was small and cramped, but had a tremendous amount of character. The new location, however, really is spacious and has a nice, open feeling like other grocery stores. I worked at Marlene's while I was in high school, and I just love, love, love the fact that it has been around for so long. It's a store where "everybody knows your name" and as a former employee, I can't stress enough to you how hard they try to help and assist their customers in any way possible. I know the prices can be pretty steep ($3.99 for a Burt's Bees lip balm? HELLO?) but this is a local, family-owned business that needs a little extra boost. And have you had twice baked potato here? Or a grilled sandwich with organic veggies? Or a slice of the vegan chocolate cake that is so delicious you won't believe it's vegan? Delicious.

The number one reason why I dream about this place: salad bar. A delicious, fresh, organic salad bar with lots of options! And great homemade dressings! Health food doesn't really exist in the south sound, this place is a welcomed change. I like this location a lot more than the Tacoma one, but both are good. There is a lot of seating in the deli upstairs and it's clean and bright! I also dream about the no-bake cookies, yum! And every time I steal a bite, or two, or three of my husband's panini-grilled veggie sandwich with veganaise. The bulk options are impressive, they have items you can't get anywhere else, and items that are more expensive than other place, but if you know what you are looking for, you will really enjoy it.

Great stuff, but this store is TOO EXPENSIVE!!! Every time I hear someone refer to Whole Foods as "whole paycheck", I wanna grab em by the earlobe and drag them to Marlene's. Yowsa. I work fairly close to the Bellevue Whole Foods and can tell you that it's consistently cheaper than almost anything at this place. The selection at Marlene's is extensive, though, and the customer service is very good. On the rare occasions when I venture over here (only when my checking account is feeling particularly robust) I'm always approached by a friendly employee who's "just checking in" to see if I need help finding anything. Parking is plentiful, restrooms are clean, and the deli is tasty. If they'd only drop their prices, I'd become a regular!!

Marlene's offers high quality food and good selection. This review was inspired by a deep passion for nutrients and health. To me, Marlene's... *Feels: -welcoming *Freshness: -selection of foods rightfully crowned as nutrient powerhouses -produce usually meets freshness standards -lean protein (some local, wild, grass-fed options) *Living: -raw foods may promote gastrointestinal health -foods supplying high amounts of beneficial bacteria are located in the refrigerated section -raw juice cleanses and purifies don't order the "Andre" juice, unless you really like beet root *Educational -featured speakers, events, and classes. -a platform for the natural health movement in our area. -open minded to the many ways of living Marlene's has a fantastic variety of food and nutrition that you can't find anywhere else under one roof. "Natural food for body and mind" -- thats my value, and hers too.

I give this place five stars because of the area it's in. Federal Way isn't the most...natural and organic area around, and I don't know what I'd do without this place. The only other place that comes close is the Fred Meyer nearby, which has a fair amount of natural and organic items, but Marlene's really does the job. Yes, the prices are rather steep, but it's all quality. They even carry emu oil. And they've kindly gave me refunds on supplements that didn't work. The staff is very friendly, and their salad bar and deli is the only like it around. Again, I am so grateful to have them here because when I'm not in Seattle, I'm in Federal Way...and my preferences will not be compromised!

Overpriced, small selection and OVERPRICED. How many ways can I say that - there prices make Whole Foods look like a discount store! I don't know why I ever stop here - I guess I think it will be cheaper. The deli/lunch counter upstairs has alright food but again overpriced. The only positive thing about Marlene's is that the staff is really nice! I'll shop for my organic food at Whole Foods.

I love Marlene's!

I had to do a quick I-5 hand off today and found myself unwittingly at the 320th exit around noon and needed lunch. I saw the sign on 320th for a Natural Deli and decided to take a chance. Marlene's is a bit hard to find - but TOTALLY worth it. The first floor is grocery and includes a nice produce section and a really great bulk foods area. Upstairs offers a fantastic deli with limitless choices along with personal care items and housewares. There also appeared to be a small section for cooking/nutritian classes. I wish that I lived closer to so I could go back more often!

This place customer service is really really bad. In November, I went to purchase some food. When I was getting my stuff ready for the cashier I made a comment about the $9.00 can of tuna and she really talked back to me nastily. She also scolded me because of some yogurt was spilled. Later, I told what had happened to a supervisor and she passed it to a manager. The manager was not nice either. Bottom line, customer service does not exist at Marlene's. I will never go there again. Whole Foods is SOOO much better. There is not comparison.

I love this place. Today I went in to purchase some organic pizza sauce and organic italian cheese. Put those toppings on top of whole-wheat tortilla with some basil and you got yourself a healthy pizza (yes pizza is a health food). I like to walk around and check out the different products they have. There is also a deli upstairs that has some fantastic vegetable soup. I have yet to try the other stuff at the deli. Rock!

I'm biased because I'm a former employee. Nonetheless, I must say I sorely miss the quality of the deli offerings, and the cleanliness of the establishment when I'm home in Boston. Of course Whole Foods is cheaper, but that's not an issue when you're supporting a local small business that's been around for freaking ever. Love it.
(5)Marie M.
I go to Marlenes for the deli only, the foods section is a bit too steep for what I'm willing to throw down... that's what I use Trader Joe's for. But, the deli is fantastic and its a once a week kinda place for me.
(4)Mark J.
This place would get five stars if the prices were a bit lower....but the selection is great, the store is pretty, I do wish that there were some Atkins products there....they are so hard to find!
(4)jodie v.
i am new to the area & always looking for vegan ingredients & options. marlene's had everything! the produce is fresh & local & the staff is friendly & informed. the deli gives plenty of 'on the go' options to choose from with lots o' good veg! some of the items are a bit pricey, but i can 'one-stop-shop' here.
(5)Jamie B.
All. Organic. Produce. Best natural market south of Seattle. Freshest, tastiest fruits and veggies.
(5)Angela M.
Pretty much love everything about this place. I have yet to go in there and ask a staff member a question that they didn't know the answer to. They have the products I need, and a lot of products I didn't even know I needed until I got to the store! As someone that has a sensitivity to wheat, I appreciate all of the wheat-free items they have available. It makes shopping so much easier!
(5)Margie S.
Clean and relaxed neighborhood market with quality products. Great deli. I am not accustomed to getting such a high level of customer service anywhere else. Friendly efficient counter staff waiting to help customers. Cashier Caroline was genuinely friendly, knowledgable, and very helpful. Store is well staffed with 20-something kids who are all on the ball. Worth the drive if you're not close.
(5)Sara C.
The salad bar is extensive and fresh, and reasonably priced. Very clean inside and friendly service!! Wish I lived closer, I'd come all the time!
(5)Tamara B.
4 stars because it's one of the only health stores in federal way, and prices are reasonable. One star removed as the employees aren't nearly as knowledgable as the employees at whole foods or super supplements. If you know exactly what you need, Marlene's is great and reasonable! If you have questions about supplements take a trip to super supps or whole foods first to ask specific questions. It's a little frustrating to read the backs of supplements for 10 minutes and then sit and watch the employee do it when I have a question. And then tell you they are unsure without even trying to ask another. Other than that, I absolutely love Marlene's.

So far I have not had one bad experience. The people are usually pretty nice and knowledgeable about inventory. The food is a little more expensive but it always is, and as far as "healthy" food goes, it seems to be the cheapest, right next to trader joes but with some better options. love them :)
